Maintaining healthy testosterone levels helps ensure a healthier body composition and metabolic rate. Maintaining healthy testosterone levels is crucial for overall well-being and health, regardless of your age. Understanding how testosterone levels change with age can help you monitor your health and identify potential issues early. Additionally, free testosterone is generally considered a more accurate indicator of biologically active hormone levels compared to total testosterone. These effects are dose-dependent, with higher testosterone levels correlating with greater improvements in muscle performance (Storer et al., 2003). Studies have shown that androgen receptor density and activity can differ between sexes, potentially explaining the disparate effects of testosterone on muscle health (Schuppe et al., 2017).
Wielding power in a feminine and especially in a masculine way thus increased testosterone in women, but this analysis did not reflect the contributions of potential confounds or (performance) stress, both of which may be relevant (6). This may be especially the case for competitions enacted in social daily life because these are the ones with high frequencies of engagement (in contrast to infrequent formalized competitions with clear win/loss outcomes, where men’s testosterone can show an increase, e.g., refs. 7 and 28. Testosterone has similar evolved functions in women’s and men’s bodies (27), but we have repeatedly found it easier to decrease testosterone in men and increase testosterone in women (3). In H1, we test whether wielding power would increase testosterone regardless of whether it is performed in gender-stereotyped masculine or feminine ways.
Social context akin to gender norms may have biological consequences when gender norms overlap with evolutionarily salient phenomena such as wielding power. Testosterone is typically understood to underlie masculinity and maleness despite theory suggesting it is related to other phenomena such as competition (6). Still, this paradigm opens up new avenues for research on gender and socially situated biology, by attending closely to the ways that gender norms constrain behaviors that themselves modulate physiology. The lack of stress axis activation means that changes in testosterone resulted from the hypothalamic–pituitary–gonadal axis and not from performance stress (androgens are also released from the adrenal gland, which releases cortisol). Cortisol is a confound of particular relevance given its potential links to both testosterone and status (32).
In the case of aromatase inhibitors, you can manage with a short-term (1-2 times) intake of a very modest dose. Estradiol levels — again, in men — are measured in picomoles per liter (pmol/L) or picograms per milliliter (pg/ml). Testosterone levels in men are measured in nanomoles per liter (nmol/L) or nanograms per milliliter (ng/ml). In our main analysis, we restricted to postmenopausal women without hormone therapy and men of European descent. The InCHIANTI study consists of relatively younger men (average age 61 years) at DNA methylation assessment and is a longitudinal study among subjects of Italian descent. Previous studies that investigated the associations of testosterone with mortality or CVD reported contradictory and inconclusive results. Hence, SHBG, as well as testosterone among men may decrease PAI1 levels, and thereby positively influence the risk of developing CVD, metabolic disorders, and inflammation.
